Eastern Student Laurel Cannon Receives Ella T. Grasso Award
Among those honored at Eastern Connecticut State University's annual Ella T. Grasso Distinguished Service Awards ceremony on March 28 was student Laurel Cannon. She was honored for her work with the Cannon Project, an organization Cannon created to educate, empower and support women of color.

WONY Radio students visit New York City stations
On Friday, March 23, a group of 13 student members of WONY 90.9 FM, SUNY Oneonta's student-run radio station, took a field trip to New York City to visit major radio institutions and learn about the industry. There, they received private guided tours of New York Public Radio and iHeartMedia. It was a rare chance for students to get a behind-the-scenes peek at professional broadcasting studios, interact with veteran broadcasters and top industry executives, and learn about internship and career opportunities.

Eastern's Women's Lacrosse Team Motivated by Unfinished Business
The 2017-18 Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team is looking to return to the victor's stand. With a core of eight seniors leading the team, the Warriors are hoping to secure the team's first Little East Conference championship since 2013. A strong and consistent offense will be key to the team this year. If the team can score goals at last year's rate, they well may reach their goal of a conference title.

Eastern Music Students Participate in National Singing Competition
In early November a group of eight Eastern Connecticut State University students participated in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Connecticut Chapter competition in Storrs. More than 100 singers from across Connecticut participated in this year's event.

Eastern Percussionists Present December Concerts
Talented percussionists at Eastern Connecticut State University recently entertained audiences that included Eastern students, faculty, staff and local community members at Eastern's state-of-the-art Fine Arts Instructional Center (FAIC) Concert Hall. The concerts included performances by Eastern's Percussion Ensemble, Percussion Group, World Percussion Ensemble, Korean Samul Ensemble and students in the Music Cultures of the World class. The concerts, which were presented on Dec. 3 and 7, were comprised of diverse and entertaining musical selections that featured timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, triangle and tambourine.

Eastern Connecticut State University English enthusiasts gathered on Dec. 6 for English Night, an event that showcases student excellence in the English Department. Eastern Students Perform in 'Amahl and the Night Visitors'
A talented cast of Eastern Connecticut State University students, alumni, faculty and staff recently performed in "Amahl and the Night Visitors" on Dec. 2 to celebrate the holiday season. Composed by Gian Carlo Menotti in 1951, the opera tells the story of the Magi from the point of view of a young disabled boy named Amahl and his widowed mother.

Eastern Concert Chorale Performs "Magnificently Mistaken"
The Concert Chorale and Chamber Singers at Eastern Connecticut State University performed their premier concert of the fall semester, "Magnificently Mistaken," on Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Fine Arts Instructional Center. Conducted by David Belles and Sarah Kaufold, the three-part performance featured musical compositions that are cloaked in mystery; with misleading twists and mistakenly developed histories.

HCC honors Phi Theta Kappa inductees
Holyoke Community College is proud to announce the newest members of the Alpha Xi Omega Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Forty-seven HCC students were honored during an induction ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 26. This special event recognizes students who have demonstrated academic achievement according to the Phi Theta Kappa standards. Students are invited to join Phi Theta Kappa when they have completed 15 college credits with a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Ten health sciences students from Eastern Connecticut State University returned from a global field course in Ghana this August. The purpose of the two-week trip was to introduce students to the health care system of a developing country.

English Students Write Fiction in Italy
Fourteen students from Eastern Connecticut State University spent a month this summer in Florence, Italy, in a global field course called "Creative Writing Abroad." The region of Tuscany's rich culture and picturesque landscapes inspired students' literary senses as they wrote, critiqued and edited original works of fiction.
